UK rail firms explore biometric ticketing

UK train operating companies have launched an initiative to supplant paper tickets with mobile apps and biometric scans.

Passengers on Arriva’s Chiltern Railways are to take part in a new trial project that will see tickets replaced by a mobile app.

The system will use Bluetooth and geolocation technology to track a passenger’s movements and automatically charge their travel account at the end of the day for journeys taken.

Future developments of the trial, which is to be carried out on a route between Oxford Parkway and London Marylebone, could see passengers invited to use fingerprint and iris scanners to pay for tickets and pass through gates.
