E-commerce sales in the US reached $93.67bn in the third quarter of 2016, an increase of 15.6% year-on-year, according to figures released by the US Department of Commerce.

This figure was just less than the 15.9% year-on-year increase witnessed in the second quarter.

For Q3, e-commerce accounted for 11.3% of total retail sales, when factoring out sales of goods not usually carried out online. When factored in, e-commerce accounted for around 7.7% of total retail sales, which itself totalled $1.22trn in the three months to September.

The Department of Commerce estimated that third quarter web sales were $101.25bn up from the $87.53bn recorded in 2015.
