Facebook unveils group payments in messaging app

US Facebook Messenger app users can now transfer cash to groups of people within the app.

Messenger users can split restaurant bills or chip in for group gifts directly from the app. Users just have to tap on the plus sign in the bottom left-hand corner of a group conversation to find more features, and tap the payment icon ($).

They can then select who to send or request money from – any number of people within a group can be selected. Users need to add a debit card’s details and set up a PIN for additional security. Money is then transferred to the nominated bank account within five days. The service is completely free.

The feature is currently available on Android and on the desktop for users in the US. An iOS version for iPhone and iPad is in the works for later this year.
