EMV cards are becoming more and more popular around the world. According to latest figures released by EMVCo, around 4.8 billion cards were in circulation in 2015, up by 1.4 billion on the previous year.
The figures also reveal that 35.8 per cent of all card-present transactions conducted worldwide between January and December 2015 used EMV chip technology.
In Europe Zone 1, EMV chip card adoption rate was 84.3 per cent (compared to 83.5 per cent in 2014). Europe Zone 1 made the highest percentage of EMV chip transactions, with 97.3 per cent of card-present payments.
Elsewhere, in Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, EMV chip card adoption rate was 71.8 per cent (rising from 59.5 per cent in 2014).
The US transition to EMV gathered pace in 2015 and is said to be continuing this year as well.
